Senate hearing on power lines to be in Norwich
NORWICH – Officials from the company proposing construction of a high power line through Chenango County will soon be called before state senators at the Norwich High School.
Representatives from New York Regional Interconnect, an Albany-based private company, are to appear before the Senate’s Committee on Energy and Telecommunications at 6 p.m., June 15 in the school gymnasium. The purpose of the hearing is for senate members to gain information relative to the 400 kV line NYRI plans to unite Marcy and Rock Tavern. Senate Committee Director Kimberly Ireland said the venue will be open to the public, but testimony will only be accepted from those invited to speak.
“We are putting together a list of some local officials to speak,” she said. “The public is welcome to attend, but it is not something where they can go speak.”
The Albany power company proposed on March 30 to build a line that will use towers between 80 and 130 feet tall every 800 feet to reinforce what they claim is an inadequate down-state electrical infrastructure, or power grid. The primary route the company plans to use would bisect Chenango County through the towns of Sherburne, North Norwich, Norwich, Guilford, Bainbridge and Afton. The alternate route to be offered by NYRI in their state Article VII application would cut through the Town of Sherburne, the City of Norwich, the Village of Oxford and the Village of Greene, before heading south to the City of Binghamton.
Power company spokesperson Jonathan Pierce said Wednesday that NYRI had not yet received official notification that the hearing was taking place, and that such an appearance before a governing body is not typical for a project of this type. He would not say whether or not the company would send representation to the hearing to answer Senate members’ questions.
