Sherburne’s 57th annual Pageant of Bands steps off with grand parade Saturday
SHERBURNE - The Annual Sherburne Pageant of Bands will be marching on for the 57th time this weekend, and participants say street-side audiences will experience the same quality of talent and excitement they have always come to expect.
“What makes this parade so great is the fact that we have bands from all over the state and sometimes we get bands from out-of-state to come to it,” said Sherburne-Earlville Marching Band trombone player Percy Bryant, a 10th grader. “This one has more to it. It’s a three day event and there are other competitions going on while you’re here.”
For Sherburne-Earlville band members especially, being the host to 32 other bands from all over New York state and playing for a home crowd makes the pageant even more important. “You get excited,” said 11th grader Matt Symonds, a five-year bass drummer in the band. “You actually know the people you’re performing for, and they support us through a lot of different stuff.”
The support provided from the Village of Sherburne is a yearly example of the community pride and enthusiasm that comes with the ownership of a first class event.
“It’s extremely special. The pageant is growing and it’s exciting for the whole community,” said S-E band director Jeff Manwaring. “I swear they have chairs out at 6 a.m. to make sure they have a seat.”
Manwaring said that while the pageant is steeped in 57 years of tradition, there are a few new twists to bring out a different angle of entertainment. He explained that for the first time in the pageant’s history, there will be an all-star band made up of nominations from each band participating. The director says that all-star selections will perform field arraignments of “Battle Hymn of the Republic,” and “House of the Rising Sun.” And when the sun goes down Friday night, at 9 p.m. the Hamilton Theater will be putting on a free “Movie Under the Stars,” featuring the musically oriented film, “Drumline.”
