Cleaning up on National Trails Day

OXFORD – Some people would like nothing more than to sleep in on a Saturday morning after a long week of work. But that would be a waste of time to members of the Bullthistle Hiking Club, and this Saturday is no exception.

Beginning at 8 a.m. at Bowman Lake State Park, the club will be celebrating their second annual National Trails Day with a hike along the trails, cleaning up along the way.

“National Trails Day is designed to be a public event,” club member Rebecca Hargrave said. “It’s a way of getting people outside and hiking.”

Hargrave said the event is sponsored by the American Hiking Society, and is geared toward all members of the community. A children’s’ hike, from 9 to 11 a.m., will also teach youth about how to use maps and the global positioning system. The group will also be preparing the area for a bridge which will be built over Bowman creek on the Finger Lakes Trail.

“The event is free and open to anyone,” Hargrave said. “They don’t have to be a member. They can come and hike and just help out.”

After the nearly five mile hike along the trails, their annual picnic will begin at noon. Hamburgers, hot dogs, and Boca burgers will be served, along with a favorite dish to pass. Non-members are asked to pay $5 per adult, and $3 per child under 12, if interested in participating in the picnic.

Hargrave said weekly hikes are scheduled through July on the club’s Web site, www.bullthistlehiking.org.

If anyone is interested in participating in tomorrow’s celebration of National Trails Day, call Ed Sidote at 334-3892, Marie Inglee at 334-2433, Rebecca Hargrave at 336-5728, or just show up at Bowman Lake State Park by or before 8 a.m.
