Bricks & Mortar Report
EDITOR’S NOTE: The Bricks & Mortar Report will provide updates every Monday on major construction projects in Chenango County.
County Route 32 project:
• Most of the heavy work has been completed. Engineer Larry Shaw said Friday there were two days left of excavation and gravel on 32B (over the bridge) as well as slope work at the north end intersection.
• Workers will trim trees, top soil and seed residents lawns as well as complete driveway restorations before the paving begins.
Housing Starts:
• There were 14 housing starts in the month of April. One each in the towns of Aston, Smithville, Pharsalia and Norwich. There were two each in Oxford and Smyrna and three each in Guilford and Sherburne.
Lowe’s Home Improvement center:
Target date is set for mid-October. Town of Norwich Supervisor David C. Law said everything is running smoothly and as scheduled. He said he has also heard that there are inquiries for four other stores to be filled in the Lowe’s plaza.
Miller Street Housing project:
Irmin A. Mody said the development of three townhouse buildings, containing two homes each, are underway and looking positive.
Public Safety Facility:
• Radio and telecommunications equipment for the new 911 Emergency Management Center arrived at the Public Safety Facility last week. Technicians were unpacking, testing and installing this week.
• Emergency Management Deputy Director Matt Beckwith said the center should be completely moved from the old jail to the new facility during the month of June.
Quizno’s
• The Town of Norwich will be adding a new restaurant chain to its list in the Chenango Towne Plaza. Quizno’s subs is scheduled to be built in the old GNC space. No set date has been announced.
Dunkin’ Donuts?
• The Town of Norwich is making way for what could be another fast food restaurant chain, if pending negotiations continue as planned.
Norwich resident Tom Morrone said work has begun on the property across from Mt. Hope Cemetery, Route 12 South.
“Right now, my partner Steve Miller of Binghamton and I have not closed on (the property),” he said. “Mt. Hope Cemetery, in our agreement to purchase, has allowed us to do work on it. But until we officially own the land, we will not be making any announcements of what our plans are.”
Morrone said the Mt. Hope Cemetery Board members must receive official clearance from the National Cemetery Association before signing over the land.
Burrell’s Construction is doing the site development, placing about 5,500 yards of gravel to bring it up to grade.
Wal-Mart supercenter: Grand opening date is set for June 28.
