Norwich florist closing after 128 years

NORWICH – After providing the Chenango County residents with service for 128 years, Harrington’s Greenhouses, 43 Cortland St., is closing its doors Friday.
Now, owners and brothers George and Gilbert Harrington, who took over the business from their parents on July 1, 1970, can begin enjoying new things in life; like going to Syracuse University basketball games and spending the holidays at home.
“I think all of us can agree. Come Christmas, we can be somewhat normal,” Gilbert Harrington said. “Instead of running all over the place for the public - not that we didn’t enjoy doing it - we will be able to participate in all of the cultural (aspects) of the holidays.”
George Harrington, who has lived in the same house and has worked the same job his entire life, said he especially will enjoy seeing things which he has missed within the last 36 years.
“I get so caught up with work that things pass me by,” he said. “A lot of businesses around town have opened and closed before I had the chance to get to them.”
The Harrington brothers decided there was no better time to close the store than the day it opened 36 years ago. And although their business is financially at its best, with no one to pass the business on to, it has become time to bring things to a halt.
“This past Mother’s Day, we made our last delivery at quarter to 10 on Saturday night,” Gilbert said. “We enjoy doing it, but it’s really hard work.”
So now, they will have the chance to sit back and finally relax.
“I look at it as we’re in the second half of our lives,” Gilbert Harrington said. “We’re going to allow some time while we’re of sound body and relatively sound mind to enjoy life.”
George and Gilbert said they are still thinking up new ideas of what to do next with the business. They have received a few offers, but no future decisions have been made.
“I think if someone were to buy the business, I’d eventually want to have them move it downtown,” Gilbert Harrington said. “To keep the businesses (flourishing) in the city.”
Coming up on its closing, the flower shop and greenhouse has marked everything down to 30 percent off.
“People are sad to see us go,” George Harrington said. “We’ve done a good job. The train has to stop somewhere.”
The Harringtons said they are both grateful for the community support which they have received. George and Gilbert said many have written letters thanking them for all they have done, which they both greatly appreciate.
“We’re both sad and glad,” Gilbert Harrington added. “But more glad. It’s been a good life, but now it’s time to move on to other things.”
