Guilty pleas heard in county court
NORWICH – A local man pleaded guilty to criminal contempt in the first degree Monday in Chenango County Court for violating an order of protection. Martin L. Manwarren Jr., 28, outlined the details of the event in question while in court.
On Feb. 10, Manwarren said he knowingly violated an order of protection issued on behalf of his girlfriend by going to her Town of Plymouth residence. He went to the residence and attempted to force his way in, causing the front door to strike the victim. The defendant said his actions were motivated by a desire to see his daughter.
County Court Judge W. Howard Sullivan sentenced Manwarren to 5 years probation, under the condition that he continue participating in the Cortland County Drug Treatment Court program, and maintain distance from the victim in compliance with the order of protection. The judge told Manwarren this was a chance for him to turn his life around.
Public Defender Alan E. Gordon told the court that his client had been attending the drug treatment program already and was doing well. He added that Manwarren was no longer involved in the troubled relationship.
Another area man who appeared in court Monday will also avoid jail time by taking a plea.
Darryle R. Mott pleaded guilty to operating a motor vehicle with a blood alcohol content greater than .08 percent.
Mott was pulled over at around 3 a.m., April 1 while driving on North Broad Street in the City of Norwich. He was discovered to have a blood alcohol content of .13 percent. This was not a first for Mott, who was previously convicted of DWI on Jan. 31, 2005.
District Attorney Joseph A. McBride notified the court that his office was giving Mott a break because of extenuating circumstances in his personal life during the time that the crime was committed. Sullivan ruled that Mott be given 5 years probation. Mott was also required to spend five days in jail, which he had already served, and to pay a fine of $1,500. His license has been revoked for a period of at least one year. As a condition of his probation, he must enter into a treatment program and find full-time employment.
