Kids still the heart of Chenango County Fair
NORWICH – As the Chenango County Fair enters the weekend, the crowds are still plentiful, and the screams are still loud; the food can still be smelled four blocks away, and the lights that bring the county to its feet still light the sky.
For decades the fair has brought joy and excitement to children and adults from all over. Every summer residents far and wide can count on good entertainment, some real fair food, exciting rides, and the many demonstrations and exhibits the fair has offered for the past 159 years.
Although the prices rise to meet higher costs, the crowds still barrel in the gates. Why?
The answer is simple: children. For some, the real heart of the fair is the children who attend it; they guarantee the fair’s existence.
“The kids, that’s what it is all about,” said Fair board member Dave Law. “It’s about education and we really have a lot to offer.”
The fair is filled with activities, games, exhibits and rides specifically designed to entertain kids.
The agriculture is sure to please all animal lovers and the 4-H exhibits of homemade goods are an educational experience that teaches children the background of what the fair is all about.
In the case of the Bear Mountain Show, it’s all about entertainment value.
“The bear show costs the Fair Association thousands of dollars, but it is provided free to simply entertain the crowds. The kids like it,” said Law.
The midway provides 14 “kiddie-rides” and games that are strictly for kids, and most of them guarantee each child will be a winner.
“I won three,” Yonaton Marcus squealed after winning three live goldfish in a matter of minutes. Marcus is an 11-year-old from Israel staying at Camp Mesorah in Guilford who thinks that the fair is great because it offers a wide range of activities.
“The fair is about having fun, and letting everybody be a kid,” said fair staff worker Kelley Harman.
Many children can’t single out a specific reason why they love the fair.
“We love it all,” agreed Ty, Levi, Blaine, Tristan and Cole Rifanburg, as they scurried about the midway Thursday afternoon.
