Summer concert series ends on a high note
OXFORD – As the weather cools and students have to return to school, the Oxford Community Band’s “Summer Concert Series” wrapped up its ‘concert tour’ with two last concerts – at the Oxford Historical Society and then the NYS Veterans’ Home.
On Aug. 10, the band set up outdoors, under the overhang of the authentic D. L. & W. railroad depot. It was the annual “Band Concert and Ice Cream Social” at the Oxford Historical Society (OHS). This concert performance was guest conducted by Becky Sabin. They played marches, show tunes, and novelty selections chosen by Sabin. One of the musical highlights of the concert was a fantastic medley of Ira Gershwin tunes. OHS President Fred Lanfear was host to the community for this pleasurable hour of music. Ice cream was sold at the olde fashioned price of five cents a bowl, and the History Museum had a special exhibit of incredible items, mostly from WWI, that thankfully survived the recent flood. (The exhibit of memorabilia is still there if anyone missed it.)
On Aug. 17, the band was indoors at the NYS Veterans’ Home. Jessica Freeman conducted the band of 20-plus volunteer musicians, and chose some special selections that brought back memories for many. Some of the music included were Glen Miller’s hits; a Phantom of the Opera medley by Andrew Lloyd Webber; and some well known Irving Berlin tunes. Several members of the audience enjoyed singing along. Of particular note was a great instrumental solo, in “Air Varié,” on euphonium (baritone horn) performed by Jim Butterfield, and Nolan Wilcox’s trumpet playing was outstanding.
Much socializing took place when the concerts were done. At the Vets’ Home, residents like Edna Hill, Oxford Academy’s former phys ed. instructor from the ‘50’s; Joseph J. Benenati Jr., former State Trooper then Chenango County Sheriff (until 1981); Jack Lewis, long time supporter of music at Oxford; and Clinton Clark, former music teacher from Mt. Upton, enjoyed the concert and the company as old friends got together and reminisced.
The summer concerts will be warmly remembered as musical and social successes enjoyed by the Oxford and surrounding community alike.
The faithful musicians who made the summer concert series a success included: Jim Butterfield, Nancy Cody, Amanda Covey, Cindy Covey, Jane Ford, Lew Ford, Jessica Freeman, Jo Herfort, Pat LaCotta, Teresa Lawton, Tom Lawton, Jennifer Ostrom, Jessica Petersen, John Petersen, Chris Robb, Becky Sabin, Evelyn Vincent, Francis Wilcox, Suzanne Wilcox, Lee Wilhelm, and Paula Williams.
A special thanks goes to Jane and Lew Ford, interim coordinators, who filled in for Tom Rice, who was called into active military duty in Afghanistan earlier this year.
