Libous secures grants for Chenango fire departments' flood efforts
BAINBRIDGE – Sen. Tom Libous (R-C, Binghamton) announced Wednesday that he has secured $150,000 in senate funds for Chenango County fire departments that were affected by this summer’s unprecedented floods. The senator made the announcement last night to more than 50 volunteer fire personnel at the Bainbridge Fire Station on West Main Street.
“Our communities have never seen anything like the devastating flooding in June,” Libous said. “Volunteer firefighters worked for days on end without rest and bravely risked their lives against the raging water to help families stay safe. These funds will help them replace some of the thousands of dollars worth of equipment that the lost so the continue their courageous work.”
The following departments will receive $25,000 Senate Grants each: Afton Fire Department, Bainbridge Fire Department, Greene Fire Department, Mt. Upton Fire Department, Norwich Fire Department and Oxford Fire Department.
Libous worked with Chenango County Fire Coordinator Matt Beckwith to assess department damage and contact affected departments.
“We can’t thank Senator Libous enough for fighting for us here in Chenango County,” said Beckwith. “These volunteers worked so hard even while some of their own homes were in danger. They really are heroes and I applaud Tom Libous for his efforts to help.”
Sen. Libous treated the fire personnel on hand to several sheet pizzas and cases of soda at the announcement as he heard gripping stories about their experiences helping victims of the flood.
“We’ve had flooding in Bainbridge before,” noted Bainbridge Fire Chief Kyle Simpkin, “but nothing even close to this. While it’ll take a long time and a lot of effort to get back to where we need to be, this grant from Tom Libous is a great step in the right direction.”
