FEMA application deadline extended

NORWICH – The early September deadline for FEMA and New York State aid has been extended. Registrations for assistance due to the late June flooding will now be accepted until Oct. 2.
“The decison to extend the federal deadline was made to ensure that all those affected by this disaster have had every opportunity to apply for assistance,” said Marianne C. Jackson, federal coordinating officer for FEMA.
To date, more than 1,200 Chenango County residents have registered with FEMA, and ten times that number have registered throughout the flood damaged area. New York State is offering individual and family grants of up to $5,000, for anything that FEMA does not cover, but only people who are registered with FEMA and New York State will be eligible.
City Emergency Management Officer A. Jones spoke of the registering process Friday. Two calls need to be made: To register with FEMA, you can either call 1-800-621-FEMA(3362) or register online at www.fema.gov. Then you need to register for the state grant by calling 1-877-7-NYS-AID(1-877-769-7243).
“I encourage anyone who had any type of water damage to register,” Jones said. He believes that many people with small amounts of damage are not applying because they think they will not get anything from FEMA.
“Why not register? It won’t cost anything to try, and you might be pleasantly surprised,” he said.
Once you register with FEMA, you will automatically receive a Small Business Administration loan application. FEMA and New York State urge all people to fill out and submit the SBA application, and Jones agrees.
“Even if people have no intention of taking it, they should still apply for the SBA loan, because if they’re denied, they may be able to get additional grant assistance from FEMA,” Jones explained.
Jones would also like to make sure people know about FEMA’s policy regarding flood insurance. If you receive FEMA aid, FEMA will offer to take out a flood insurance policy for you, paying the initial costs. If you turn down this policy or cancel it, and your home is damaged by flooding in the future, you will not be eligible for any further FEMA aid.
Now that the FEMA deadline has been extended, no one has an excuse for not registering.
“The worst thing that can happen is they say no. It doesn’t cost you anything to hear it,” Jones said.
