Norwich remembers former Mayor Marjorie Chomyszak

NORWICH – She will be remembered as an advocate for women, for teachers, for children, for the arts and for her community. Former City of Norwich Mayor Marjorie Chomyszak passed away this morning at the Bridgewater Center for Rehabilitation in Binghamton.
Chomyszak, who held the office from 1990-1991, was the first woman to be elected Mayor. She upset Casey Jones, who had been mayor for eight years. Former Mayor MaryLou Stewart credits Chomyszak with paving the way for other women in city politics.
Deputy Registrar Deana D. DuFour said she remembers Chomyszak riding a moped to work. “She always wore a dress. It would fly all over. She used to sit on stairs to do work. Everyone would gather around her.”
Stewart said: “She was a fiesty woman.”
Chomyszak worked tirelessly on several projects including the Norfolk, England and Norwich, New York reunions. The next “Reunion of 100 Norwiches” from around the world is scheduled locally Oct. 9 and 10.
“What a shame she won’t be hear to enjoy it again,” Stewart said. “She worked very hard trying to establish Norwich as one of the places on the tour. She put her stamp on the community with that.”
Former school teacher Kate Stewart of Norwich remembers her friend as a “wonderful teacher” who “fought hard for teacher’s rights with vim and vigor” and “taught that way, too. Her students loved her.”
“She is a force that will be missed,” Stewart said.
A lover of the arts, Chomyszak was president of the Chenango County Council of the Arts from 1981 to 1983. “She sang beautifully,” Kate Stewart said.
Mayor Joseph P. Maiurano noted that her door was always open. “She was a people person. She was definitely community-minded. She wanted the best for Norwich. During her reign as mayor, she did a super job.”
In the minutes of Chomyszak’s last council meeting, now deceased former Alderman Charles Angelino said, “She will be missed.” The council concurred.
Funeral arrangements are pending at the Wilson Funeral Home in Norwich. A complete obituary will appear in Wednesday’s edition of The Evening Sun.
