FEMA deadline extended to Oct. 16

NORWICH – Individuals who have still not filed an application for federal relief after the late June flooding have been granted another reprieve. FEMA officials have announced that for the second time, the application deadline has been extended.
“We are extending the deadline again because we have seen a surprising number of people registering in the past few weeks,” said Federal Coordinating Officer Marianne C. Jackson. The Oct. 2 deadline has been extended by two weeks. Registrations for both the federal aid from FEMA and the New York State Individual and Family Grant Program, can now be filed until Monday, Oct. 16.
The total number of people who have registered with FEMA and the Small Business Administration so far is over 13,000. These organizations have approved over $123 million in aid. In addition, New York State has given out $20.2 million dollars in aid as a result of the Individual and Family Grant Program.
FEMA officials encourage everyone who had any type of damage due to the flooding to register. Two phone calls need to be made. First you need to register with FEMA, by calling 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) between the hours of 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. You can also register online at www.fema.gov. Then individuals should register with New York State, by calling 1-888-7-NYS-AID (1-888-769-7243). Lines are open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
A few Disaster Assistance Service Centers are still open throughout the affected region. Disaster recovery experts are available to meet with people from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday at the town hall in Conklin, the Civic Center in Sidney, and the Lowe’s parking lot in Oneonta.
