Greene rallies from early deficit

Football

Greene 35, Moravia 12
MORAVIA – Moravia stunned Greene’s defense early, then the Trojans quelled that sting with a pounding running game and 421 yards of total offense.
The Trojans scored the next 35 points after Greg Langtry’s 79-yard TD pass to Zach Hargett. Keith Savory, David Yeager, Chris Engler, Nate Whittaker, and David Micha all had scoring runs. Engler hit paydirt from 17 yards and Nate Whittaker dashed 53 yards – both in the third quarter – to extend a one-TD halftime lead to 28-6.
Engler’s 66 yards on the ground led a balanced attack, and quarterback Corey Breck passed for a season-high 145 yards on 6-of-13 attempts. John Carlin caught three balls for 53 yards.

Bainbridge-Guilford 36, Deposit 7
DEPOSIT – B-G clinched its first winning season in three years Saturday, blowing out Deposit, who led by one TD early.
“We felt we didn’t play that well against Groton last week,” said B-G coach Tim Mattingly. “We executed well and took care of the ball. Overall, it was probably the best game we’ve played this season.”
Deposit recovered a B-G fumble on the opening kickoff, and Brett Hauber’s 5-yard TD run put the Lumberjacks on top.
The Bobcats (2-1, 5-1) then scored on the next two offensive possessions in the first quarter to grab the lead for keeps. Chad Cornish scored on a 27-yard TD run, and Dylan Whittaker hauled in an 18-yard TD pass from Chris McGinnis.
McGinnis threw a pair of TD passes to Kenny Pixley as well and finished 6-for-8 for 90 yards. It was the first three-TD passing game for B-G since the start of Section IV conference play in 1993. “We felt we had a couple mismatches we needed to exploit, and one of those was with Kenny Pixley on the outside,” Mattingly said. “It worked well, and Chris threw the ball extremely well.”
Cornish added a second scoring run in the third quarter, this one from 32 yards out to finish with a team-high 86 yards on the ground. “We’ve put ourselves in a position to control our own destiny,” Mattingly said. “Next week is our third road game in a row at Oxford. They’re a tough team, so we need a good week of practice to get ready for them.”

Cazenovia 62, Sherburne-Earlville 8
CAZENOVIA – Cazenovia scored four times by run, three by pass, and two more on defensive touchdowns Saturday against Sherburne-Earlville. The Lakers, said S-E coach Mick James, were every bit as good as previously advertised.
“They are a complete team; they do everything well,” James said. “I’d expect them to win our section.”
Chad Koesterer hit Tim Mimms on a 33-yard TD pass in the first quarter on a 3rd-and-13, and a punt return to S-E’s eight set up Brian Bartlett’s eight-yard scoring run. Other than that, James said, his team played solid football until the seven-minute mark of the second quarter.
Koesterer, who suffered an injury after his initial TD pass, was replaced by Aaron Race. Race threw a 53-yard dump-off pass score to Justin Hubbard, and from there it was all Cazenovia. The host club scored four touchdowns in the second quarter, and Hubbard finished with four touchdowns – the last on a five-yard fumble return.
Nate Kline rushed for 126 yards to lead S-E, and put his team on the board in the third quarter scoring on a 49-yard run. “Once they scored that first touchdown in the second quarter, it kind of landslided from there,” James said. “They are just a really good, fundamentally sound football team.”
S-E (0-6) wraps up its division schedule against V-V-S this week.

Oxford 39, Hancock 0
OXFORD – Oxford (4-2) posted its second shutout this season – both by the same score – rolling up a season-high 528 yards of offense against winless Hancock Friday.
After a relatively uneventful first quarter in which Oxford’s 40-yard TD pass to John Witchella provided the only points, Oxford scored three rushing TDS in the second quarter. Scott Shackelton scored on runs of six and 18 yards, and Kyle Smith’s eight-yard scoring burst made it 26-0 at halftime.
Ian Grundner found the endzone from seven yards in the third quarter, and sophomore Alex Champlin connected with Jake Vincent on a six-yard scoring pass in the fourth. Shackelton amassed 98 yards rushing to lead his club and Dustin Christophersen netted 78 yards on the ground. Oxford finished with 376 yards on the ground as it prepares for B-G this Friday.
“We ran and passed the ball extremely well, and we were able to work in a lot of our second-team guys in the second half,” said Oxford coach John Curtis.
