Norwich band wins another 1st on the way to the Dome
NORWICH – With only the championship show left, Norwich has made a comeback with its third straight win.
The field band conference show was held in Norwich Saturday, with seven bands competing.
The lone entry in small school division III was the Pride of Westmoreland earning 73.05. In small school division II, Johnson City Wildcats placed second with 76.20 and placing first was Johnstown Marching Sir Bills with 79.65.
In large school division II, Central Square Redhawk Regiment placed second with 85.30 and the Baldwinsville Bees placed first earning 85.80. Band Director Don Burke says these two bands have placed closely all season and the Syracuse Carrier Dome show should prove to be a very competitive event.
In small school division I, the New Hartford Spartans placed second with 86.70 and the Norwich Tornado earned first place with 87.75.
Following the performances was the drum major retreat, where the scores and trophies are handed out. On hand to help award the performers was Superintendent Gerard O’Sullivan and the entire board of education. Seniors were recognized and escorted down the track by their parents.
Due to the fact the conference goes into the fall season, weather conditions do not always hold out and often times the shows may be forced to perform indoors. The marching band had performed inside all week before the home show. Weather conditions did although hold steady in order to hold the show outside at Ulrich Field on Saturday.
“We were really lucky to be able to have our show outside. We practiced indoors all week in preparation and had to practice Saturday morning,” band treasurer Allyson Hotchkin said.
Next week’s show will be the final championship held at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse. The performances will begin at 8 a.m., Sunday and run throughout the entire day into the evening. There are a total of 56 bands in the competition within different classes and divisions. Norwich takes the field at approximately 7:12 p.m., Sunday.
Band President Nancy Monday says the last show depends on what band puts more work into their performance.
In preparation of the championship show, the marching band will be practicing at the YMCA this week. At 5 p.m. Saturday, the band will be holding a free dress rehearsal performance for the general public at the YMCA. For more information call the band office at 334-1600 ext. 1163.
