Lincklaen voters extend office terms
LINCKLAEN – Voters in the Town Lincklaen said Tuesday that they are satisfied with their leadership. If elected again next year, Supervisor Wayne C. Outwater - who has been in office for 11 years - will hold the seat for four years rather than the traditional two.
The term for highway superintendent was also extended from two to four years. James C. Fuller, Jr. has held that position in Lincklaen for 30 years.
“Why not extend the terms?” Outwater said this morning. “We have a town justice for four years, four town councilman and the town clerk - they’re all four-year terms.”
The term for supervisor was extended by a vote of 67 to 42. Voters increased the term of office for highway superintendent by a vote of 67 to 39. Both take effect January 1, 2008. Lincklaen, located in the northwest corner of Chenango County, has a population of about 400.
Outwater, who plans to run again next fall, said it is difficult to find people in a small town like Lincklaen who would quit their job for a two-year post.
“It’ll be difficult to fill James’ shoes. This will make it more attractive for someone to think about running,” he said.
According to Chenango County Clerk of the Board R.C. Woodford, other towns have attempted in the past to increase the term of town supervisor but failed.
