City PD transfers officer to court security
NORWICH – For years, the City of Norwich Police Department has been in charge of city court security, but as of today, New York State will be taking over.
Two weeks ago, City of Norwich Police Chief Joseph Angelino received notice of the change from the state. “We were advised, as of Nov. 16, the State of New York Office of Court Administration would be taking over the security of the city court,” Angelino said.
When Angelino first heard unconfirmed reports of the change, he brought the issue to the Common Council. Angelino was concerned about the possibility of layoffs. After discussing the issue with the state, it was decided that one City of Norwich officer would be transferred, becoming a state officer instead. According to Angelino, the state would have liked to transfer two officers, but the city could only offer one. The other court security officer needed will be transferred from another district.
Several city officers were interested in the position. The state interviewed the prospective employees and chose longtime City PD Officer Lisa Wolf. “I’m sorry to see Lisa Wolf leaving,” said Angelino. “I know it was a job opportunity many sought, but she will be sorely missed. She was a good officer.”
The City of Norwich Police Department presented Wolf with a plaque on Wednesday, to thank her for her service.
Wolf’s transfer has left the Norwich Police Department with one less officer. Angelino and the city council are still in discussion about the possibility of filling that position. No decision has yet been reached.
According to the police chief, New York State started putting state officers in court security positions down state, and the trend has been spreading from there. While Angelino admits that this will free up city officers to be on patrol, he is still saddened by the change. “I enjoyed the working relationship we had with the court employees and judges. It’s a sad page in history that is being turned,” he said.
