OV boosters raise community spirit
OTSELIC – For years, the Otselic Valley Booster Club dwindled down until only one or two members remained, but now the club has resurfaced with new-found ambition. Since the booster club was reestablished last December, its members have been hard at work raising money and community pride.
Booster club president JoAnn Cerasani explained that the club’s first goal upon inception was to put up an outdoor scoreboard. According to Dave Loomis, Otselic Valley’s athletic director, the school had never had an outdoor scoreboard before. “We took guidance from Dave on the things we wanted to upgrade. We just want to make sure the kids can have pride in what they have in the school,” Cerasani said.
With the help of many local donors, the booster club was able to raise enough money to pay for the $5,000 scoreboard. According to Loomis, the scoreboard will serve dual functions, working for both baseball and soccer games. The scoreboard was installed by booster club members and volunteers, and a local business, T&M Graphics donated a banner, listing people the booster club wished to thank. “The kids have been really excited,” Cerasani said. “They think it’s great.”
“From my point of view, the booster club does a lot more than scoreboards,” Loomis said. “Their primary function is to help improve school spirit and camaraderie in both the school and the community.” Since the club was organized, they have done a lot of work toward that goal. In October, they hosted a spirit night for the community that included a large bonfire. They have been selling Otselic Valley sweatshirts, and have had more interest than they originally anticipated.
The club’s next goal will be to replace the scoreboard and shot clocks in the gymnasium. According to Loomis, the current score board is approximately 25 years old. The cost of that project will be approximately $9,000. The booster club has a wide variety of projects they will look at tackling after that, including dugouts and lighting for the baseball field. “The booster club has really helped us a lot,” Loomis said. “I eagerly anticipate what will be done in the future.” Cerasani is already looking forward to the clubs next project. “We’re always accepting more donations,” she said.
