Norwich eatery marks first year in business
NORWICH – The Bohemian Moon opened its doors in Norwich a year ago this week, and while it has not been an easy road, the loyalty of the customers and the staff has made it all worthwhile.
Many restaurants fail within their first year, but Brenda Gibbon, owner of the Bohemian Moon, has found the right combination of unique menu choices and comfortable favorites. “Because we’re so different, we either hit the right clientele or we don’t,” Gibbon said. She credits her customers, employees, family and city officials for helping the Bohemian Moon to become successful. “We have a lot of customers who come in once a week,” Gibbon said.
“People come in because they know they can hang out and talk,” said Gibbon, crediting her friendly staff, most of whom have been with her since the restaurant first opened. Gibbon thinks her low turnover rate might have something to do with her laid-back style. She rarely yells, and says dancing and listening to music is the key to success. “It’s a fun place to work,” she said.
The flooding of late June took its toll on many in the area, and the Bohemian Moon was no exception. Almost two feet of water filled the basement, and a lot of supplies were damaged, but with help from the Norwich Fire Department, the damage was contained. Gibbon said throughout her time at the restaurant, the City of Norwich has been very supportive and easy to work with.
In addition to owning the Bohemian Moon, Gibbon also teaches Spanish at Holy Family School. Although it keeps her busy, she says having other responsibilities has been helpful. “It helps so I’m not 100 percent focused on the restaurant,” she said. Gibbon has lived in Norwich for most of her life, however, she feels it was the restaurant that gave her a true sense of community. She supports as many local businesses as she can, buying local produce and herbs for the restaurant. The local merchants seem to respond in turn.
Gibbon plans to celebrate the Bohemian Moon’s anniversary on Dec. 1 and 2, with a modified dinner menu. She plans to keep the restaurant fresh this year by expanding the lunch selections within the next month, and by having local bands perform one or two nights a week. The Bohemian Moon is open for lunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and for dinner from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday, 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday. The Bohemian Moon also offers catering services and private parties. They have hosted baby showers, weddings, rehearsal dinners, and events for political candidates.
