Holiday tradition returns to Unadilla Valley with Thursday’s Christmas concert

NEW BERLIN – Christmas carols can be heard echoing in the halls of Unadilla Valley Central School as students prepare for their first “traditional” Christmas concert in seven years.
In years past, UV has backed away from conducting a traditional concert filled with carols and holiday cheer. Although the auditorium was packed for the holiday concert years ago, some of the feedback was negative, therefore, future Christmas concerts instead had a “beach party” theme.
Upon the arrival of this holiday season. Superintendent Rex Hurlburt and the board of education along with principals Frank Johnson and Steve Griffin decided to make the change and have a Christmas concert performed once again.
Ever since the cancellation of the traditional concert, Music Directors Paul and Meredith Hudson have held an annual “California beach party” and barbeque. There was no Christmas music, no decorations, and as Meredith says, “not a sign of Christmas in sight.”
Since the decision to go back to the traditional way, students have been busy practicing music and decorating the auditorium for their “deck the halls” celebration.
“The music wing is a joyous place filled with laughter and song,” Meredith said.
The Christmas celebration is getting kicked off today, as students are having rehearsal after school, followed by a sandwich dinner and a night of caroling. Traveling through New Berlin and South New Berlin, students loaded on a school bus are planning to sing at several stops for almost three hours.
Meredith says the enthusiasm reflects how well students are performing. She says the students have advanced from levels one and two to levels five and six. All chorus members received voice lessons this year as part of the curriculum, as well as band members.
“The skill and musicianship of the students is soaring and the change will be seen in the upcoming concert,” Meredith said.
This year’s Christmas concert will be held at 7:01 p.m., a school tradition, on Thursday at the UVCS auditorium. Performing will be middle and high school bands under the direction of Paul Hudson, middle and high school choruses and the Carnegie Hall honor chorus with featured singers all under the direction of Meredith Hudson with accompanist Kim Patterson.
There will be a music boosters concession stand open at intermission. The concert is free and open to the public. A donation jar will be available for people who want to “adopt a singer” in support of the honorary trip to New York City chorus members are embarking on in the spring.
