G-MU captures Morris Boosters Tournament
G-MU 49, Morris 37 (final)
Charlotte Valley 49, Otselic Valley 28 (consolation game)
ONEONTA – G-MU won the latest offering in this local rivalry taking the Morris Boosters Tournament title in the clubs’ third meeting this season.
Morris was coming off a win last week against the Raiders to avenge an early-season defeat, but it wasn’t able to contain G-MU sophomore Dani Conway, nor did it expect the career-high game from Ashlea Osborne.
Osborne scored six of her career-high 11 points in the fourth, and Conway, the tourney MVP, finished with 23 including 14-for-16 from the foul line. “When you’re playing a team you know this well, you really don’t make many adjustments,” said G-MU coach Jim Johnson. “You just keep pounding and hope things go in.”
G-MU used a 12-0 run in the third quarter to erase Morris’ 22-18 lead and pull away for the victory.
The Raiders’ tandem of Brittney Peet and Brittney Rudnitsky were instrumental in limiting Morris’ leading scorer, Bobbi-Jean Bryden, to just 11 points. Bryden was averaging around 20 points a game in the first two meetings. “They did a great job guarding Bryden,” Johnson said. “We wish this was a league win over them, but we’ll take it.”
Charlotte Valley held OV without a point in the first quarter to snatch a double-digit lead and cruise to the consolation game victory. Amber Wood scored 10 points to pace OV.
