Winter Living Celebration: On with the show ...
SHERBURNE – Despite the lack of traditional winter weather this year, Rogers Environmental Education Center will hold its 29th annual Winter Living Celebration from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, at the Rogers Center, 2721 State Highway 80 in Sherburne.
“Celebrate the splendor of the winter season with the company of friends and family during the Rogers Center annual Winter Living Celebration,” the web site says.
Even though the celebration will be much different than in years past, Rogers Director Marsh Guzewich is confident that the event will be a success. “It will definitely go fine,” Guzweich said.
The event usually hosts an array of activities, including snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and horse-drawn sleigh rides. Due to unseasonable weather, those events will not be possible this year. Instead, trails will be open for hiking, and horses will draw wagons instead of sleighs.
“We’ve changed our way of thinking this year. There’s always something to do,” said Guzweich. In addition to the hiking and wagon rides, other exhibits and activities will include an old-time woodcutting exhibit, Christmas Tree Recycling, the Earlville Boy Scouts will man a winter camping exhibit, Opportunities for Chenango’s Early Headstart will provide a play station, and the Department of Environmental Conservation will have many exhibits including a environment conservation officer K-9 demonstration.
At the visitor’s center, John Porcino will be holding a story telling activity at 12:15, 1:45 and 3:15 p.m. There will also by music, performed by the Susquehanna String Band at 11:30 a.m., 1 and 2:30 p.m.
At the Bird Exhibit Cabin, Henry Lappen will host a program on birds in their habitat at noon, 1 and 2 p.m. The program is scheduled to last for half an hour.
Refreshements will be sold, with proceeds going to benefit the Chenango Bird Club, the Sherburne Rotary Club and the Sherburne Lions Club.
