Save-a-Lot cornerstone of South Plaza resurgence

NORWICH – Complete with a new look, the owners of the Save-a-Lot grocery store in Norwich say the identity and image of their business is still ultimately defined by two things – quality and savings.
Jim Diamond Jr., son of owner Jim Diamond Sr. and manager of the Norwich location, said the store’s re-vamped facade and interior in the South Plaza is just one in a number of ways the store has updated its features. To the Diamonds, while the updates are a nice addition, their selling point still requires no gimmicks – it’s just savings of up to 40 percent everyday.
“We’re all new inside,” said Diamond Jr. “And it’s still very simple – save up to 40 percent on everything across the board.”
Along with the daily savings, the Diamonds contend their store’s meat and produce departments are not only the lowest priced in town, but also the freshest.
“There is no need for a shopper’s club card,” Diamond Jr. said. “We are the price leader in meat and produce, and we have the freshest in town.”
Diamond said his parent’s store is literally a “mom & pop,” and that an emphasis on quality and good buying strategies allow them to compete with the larger supermarkets.
“It’s the most important part of the Save-a-Lot mentality,” said Diamond Jr. “There is no dog and pony show; what you see is what you get. People come here for the savings.”
Diamond Jr. also pointed out that a long-standing family relationship with their employees has made the atmosphere, and service, at Save-a-Lot both advantages when compared to other stores.
“It’s family owned and operated,” he said. “But it operates like a family, too. It makes it nice to come to work every day.”
Aside from Save-a-Lot, Diamond Jr. said the entire South Plaza is under new ownership and undergoing extensive renovations. He said it has been a wonderful transformation, and that they are looking forward to enjoying the new surroundings for years to come.
“They’ve breathed some new life back into this place,” he said. “And we don’t plan on going anywhere. We’re here for the long run.”
