Forks ekes out win over Purple

Chenango Forks 96, Norwich 90
NORWICH – A controversial victory in the 200 freestyle relay helped Chenango Forks to a win Friday in handing the Tornado just their third loss of the season Friday night.
The third leg of the Blue Devils’ quartet was flagged for leaving the block early, however, under a new rule instituted this year, both judges need to concur on the ruling. Forks won the race and took the event by two points, but with a disqualification, it would have created a large points swing and given Norwich the victory.
“It’s a tough way to lose a meet, but with a score that close, there were probably other places where the points could have been made up,” said Norwich coach Rick Marchant, who is in his final season coaching the Tornado. “Chenango Forks is a good team and they had only two events where all of their swimmers didn’t score. That’s a lot of fifth-place points.”
Dan Wenzel (200 IM), Kane Streichert (50 free), Evan Wendt (diving), and Ryan Marchant (100 fly) had wins in succession to keep the Tornado within two points. Forks created some breathing room with a one-two-four finish in the 100 backstroke – after the 200 free relay – to open a 14-point lead.
