Tax prep program unveiled
NORWICH – On Saturday, members of the Earned Income Tax Credit Partnership Committee kicked off this year’s tax season.
Representatives from several local agencies attended the event to inform the public of their eligibility for the Earned Income Tax Credit. The Super Saturday event also informed participants of the 12 local tax preparation sites that will prepare your taxes free of charge between January and April.
Chenango United Way Director and Chair of the County EITC Partnership Committee Elizabeth Monaco introduced the program.
“The EITC program started in 2004 when several area United Way organizations came together to increase awareness of the Earned Income Tax Credit and free tax preparation,” Monaco said. What makes the EITC different than other tax credits is that low to moderate income families are usually eligible for the credit, even if they paid a very small amount of federal income tax.
“The first year we prepared less than 50 tax returns,” Monaco said. This number has been steadily increasing. Last year more than 150 returns were filed and more than $140,000 was distributed as part of the EITC. This year the organization is hoping to prepare more than 500 tax returns.
To make that possible, students at Colgate University and SUNY Morrisville trained in tax preparation are donating their time to file the returns. Jane Sheeham, the student coordinator for the program at Colgate, spoke on behalf of the volunteers. “We are looking forward to working one-on-one with the members of the local community,” she said.
The EITC Partnership Committee has been working closely with Shelly Willette from the IRS. “ Shelly has been critical in the training process,” Monaco said. They have also been working with Dianne Cromp from the Madison County Department of Social Services. A similar campaign has been running in Madison County for the past five years.
Part of the EITC program is to encourage the families to set up bank accounts if they do not already have them. Representatives from NBT Bank and Partners Trust as well as Citizen’s Bank and GHS Federal Credit Union were on hand to help with that process. Also represented were Opportunities for Chenango, Cornell Cooperative Extension and AARP Tax Aide.
To find out if you are eligible for the EITC and free tax preparation, call the EITC Hotline at Opportunities for Chenango at 336-2101. An additional hotline has been set up through the Chenango County Office of the Aging for AARP sponsored tax preparation sites. The number is 337-1770. Special attention will be given to individuals 60 or over.
