Oneonta ekes by Purple Tornado

Oneonta 51, Norwich 47
NORWICH – Oneonta handled Norwich quite easily in the first meet several weeks ago. The Yellowjackets found the Tornado almost too difficult to handle Tuesday night eking out a road win.
Andrew Tenace, who missed the front end of two one-and-one foul shot attempts in the final minute, sealed the Yellowjackets’ win making both free throws with 1.7 seconds remaining.
“I’m not sure they took us lightly, and knowing their coach (Jerry Mackey), I think he would have his team as prepared as they needed to be,” said Norwich coach Mark Abbott. “You wonder if a team would have the same focus after winning so easily, but right from the opening tap, we showed that we would be around the full 32 minutes.”
Oneonta led by seven at halftime and stretched the lead to 11 thanks to a Dan O’Brien three ball at the 30-second horn, and a Tenace foul shot that made it 35-24 with 5:12 left in the quarter.
Norwich found seams in the Oneonta zone finishing the quarter on an 11-2 run. Amos Parry scored six straight points for Norwich, the last a mid-range jumper to close the game to 35-30.
Alex Mirabito hit a runner in the lane for Oneonta to up the lead back to seven before Robert Martin drove for a Norwich layup and Shane Thompson pumped in a three ball from the right corner with 13 seconds left in the quarter paring the margin to 37-35.
Norwich traded baskets with Oneonta early in the fourth, and a tremendous individual play by Martin set up his tying three. Martin made a diving steal in front of the Oneonta bench, and then drained a long-range three from several feet behind the arc tying the game at 45-45 with 3:06 to play.
Alex Van Deusen put Oneonta ahead for good hitting two foul shots, and Mirabito sunk another short jumper in the lane padding the margin.
“I love our team; they are one of my all-time favorites. Our 9-7 record does not describe this team,” Abbott said. “Tonight was a question of us believing we could win. A lot of our preparation was from a mental standpoint... we’re not into moral victories, but beyond that, we proved to ourselves we can play with the best team in the league.”
Martin led Norwich with 21 points, his fifth 20-point-plus game this season, and Parry added 11. O’Brien and Tenace scored 13 apiece for Oneonta.
“Robert proved again that he is without question one of the best players in our league,” Abbott said. “The things he does for us beyond scoring are immeasurable. This is a team effort, but he’s really our guy and he comes through for us big time.”
Norwich plays at Johnson City Friday.

Unatego 56, Greene 51
GREENE – Unatego overcame the absence of three starters to hand Greene (7-8) its fifth loss in six games.
With two starters out with injury, starting guard Kyle Palmer left in the first quarter with an injury leaving the reserves to pick up the slack. Alex Hendrickson responded with six three balls – three in the first quarter – and starting forward Owen Moss tallied 17 of his 23 in the second half.
Greene rallied from a seven-point halftime deficit closing to within one point after three. The Trojans were within striking range late in the game until Kahle Harris’ three for Unatego pushed the lead back to five with 1:17 to play. “We had a great third quarter, but we could never get over the top,” said Greene coach Jeff Paske. “The inside-outside combo of Moss and Hendrickson hurt us.”

Otselic Valley 66, McGraw 45]
SOUTH OTSELIC – Otselic Valley would be hard-pressed to come up with a better half of basketball as it rolled to a fifth straight win Tuesday.
The Vikings (12-6) put up 50 points in the first half, its best scoring half this season by far, and led by 35 at the break over a squad it beat 70-57 in December.
“That was about as good a first half as I think I’ve ever had,” said OV coach Dave Loomis. “Everything seemed to work on offense and defense. Things kind of evened out in the second half, but it would have been pretty hard to repeat the first half. We had a good floor game from a number of kids, especially kids off the bench.”
David Cerasani led with 23 points, Taylor Duell scored 10, and Robert Guyer along with Greg Evans controlled the boards with 11 and 10 rebounds respectively.
The Vikings host Brookfield Friday – the last squad to hand OV a defeat.
