Norwich PTA recognizes volunteers on Founders' Day

NORWICH – Parents, teachers, faculty and community members gathered Wednesday night to honor volunteers who help make quality education a priority for the Norwich City School District.
President of the Parent Teacher Association Council Dottie Trojan welcomed attendees to the 110th Founder’s Day Celebration.
Gibson school PTA Vice President Karen LaPointe spoke about the progress made by their group. This year at Gibson, the Halloween float came in second, over $1,000 in books was sold at this year’s book fair and the annual fundraiser was highly profitable. She said without the dedication of volunteers, many of the activities would not be possible.
Each year one individual is chosen from each council to receive the Honorary Life Membership Award, given to those who provide a high level of volunteerism to their school.
In a video presentation by Gibson Primary students and George Brown, Gard Turner received this recognition. Turner helps at major events such as Pumpkin Festival, Colorscape and many other functions. A city police officer, he is also known for providing safety tips to students and endless hours of service behind the scenes.
“He is our unsung hero,” Brown said.
Victoria Mitchell spoke on behalf of Perry Browne Intermediate school, saying its PTA has had a successful year. They had a profitable candle sale, $1,000 in books were donated to the library and they took part in the Pumpkin Festival parade.
Receiving the honorary life membership award for Perry Browne was Sharon Wilson, recognized for her efforts during Pumpkin Fest, Colorscape, Rotary Club events, helping to start and coordinate wellness day, and is known for her baked goods at the school and for Relay for Life.
President of the middle and high school PTSA Lynn Parker says these are people who exceed the definition of a volunteer and go above and beyond what is asked of them. The PTSA provides two scholarships for seniors, supports the after prom party and this year gave incoming freshmen welcome bags on their first day in the high school. The PTSA is also bringing in a motivational speaker for sixth through twelfth graders tonight.
Abe Abraham spoke on behalf of the PTSA from the City of Norwich and presented the honorary life membership award to Bob Mason, the city’s youth director. Abraham said Mason has always provided a full schedule of activities for kids in this community. His job is only said to be part-time, but as Abraham noted, anyone who knows him knows better.
Mason said he was honored and surprised by the award.
“Over the past 30 years, many good things have happened and this is up near the top,” Mason said.
Following the award presentation, the Norwich Jazz band, under the direction of Don Burke, played tunes to entertain guests.
