Baden-Powell scouts honored

CHENANGO COUNTY – The National Boy Scouts of America recently honored Chenango’s governing council with an achievement award.
The Baden-Powell Council, which covers Chenango County Boy Scouts, was one of the few programs nationally recognized for the “Quality Council Award.” This award lauds councils which have had an overall outstanding program in all areas of performance.
Executive Director Stephen Hoitt said his council has shown outstanding performance in areas such as membership, fundraising and unit growth. Participation in the Scouts’ summer camp, in particular, increased 30 percent last year.
Also in 2006, the scouting program posted a record gain of 15.5 percent growth in membership, balanced its budget and awarded 76 young men the Eagle Scout Award. The council also saw 68 percent of its programs honored with excellence, compared to the national average of 50 percent.
The Baden-Powell Council runs five programs in the greater Binghamton area. Cub scouting is for boys in the first through fifth grades. Boy scouting is for boys ages 11-18. Venturing is a coed high adventure program for teenagers 14-21. Exploring is a career program for teenagers 14-21. For several area schools, the Boy Scouts run an in-school character/career education program for both boys and girls in kindergarten through 12th grade.
The Baden-Powell covers six counties in New York and Pennsylvania. In 2006 there were 559 children from Chenango County and 8,050 youth total supported by a budget of just under $1.2 million. Eighteen percent of the budget was supported by the United Way. The remainder was raised via membership fees and charitable contributions from businesses, foundations and individuals.
