Chenango Valley 62, Greene 41
CHENANGO BRIDGE – A late third-quarter burst for Chenango Valley, fueled by a technical foul on the Greene bench and some ill-placed Trojans passes, led to the Warriors advancing in the Class B playoffs Friday.
A controversy over a shot that caromed off the top of the backboard led to the technical foul, and the Warriors finished the third quarter on a 9-2 run. A series of turnovers compounded the damage as CV moved its lead to as many as 23 points in the fourth.
“We were right there in the third quarter, but we’re a younger team and we had a bunch of turnovers,” said Greene coach Bill Case. “Chenango Valley plays great team defense, and once they got the lead up to 10, they were using all of the shot clock and executing well.”
The Trojans rallied in the second and third quarters from double-digit deficits to close CV’s lead to five points on two occasions. The Warriors ended the first half on an 11-4 run to lead 34-22.
In the third, Jessica Smith hit two three balls, and Megan McDermott’s driving layup with 2:06 left in the stanza pared that 12-point deficit to 41-36.
Liz Heller had 19 points for CV including four three balls, and Stephanie Hoffman canned a trio of treys to wind up with 11.
Smith scored 13 to pace Greene.
