Greene man sentenced in animal cruelty case
NORWICH – A man from Greene accused of abusing several dogs – starving one of them to death – pleaded guilty in county court Friday. Douglas A. Hasslett pleaded guilty to the felony charge of aggravated cruelty to animals.
“It should be on the record that the pre-plea and mental health reports indicate the defendant has significant mental health issues and if it wasn’t for that, he’d be going to prison,” said District Attorney Joseph McBride.
Originally the Chenango County Sheriff’s Department arrested Hasslett for 10 counts of failure to license a dog, nine counts of cruelty to animals and one count of aggravated cruelty to animals. One of the dogs was found in the defendant’s freezer, apparently placed there after it had starved to death, said police. Hasslett later said he had saved the body because he wished to perform an autopsy on the animal.
Hasslett was released pending a the psychological evaluation in September. “Mr. Hasslett has no phone, he has a car, but I don’t think it actually works,” said Public Defender Alan Gordon. at the time. Hasslett said he had a driver’s license at one time but did not know if it was expired. He failed to show up for his initial court appearance and the court ordered a warrant for his arrest.
Hasslett willingly surrendered the nine surviving dogs to the SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) for adoption, said Gordon. The dogs received their recovery treatment at Pet Street Station Animal Hospital in Norwich. The cost was paid for by the Town of Greene in the amount of $2,500.
Hasslett was sentenced to one year interim probation and because of his limited income, he was ordered to pay $400 in restitution to the Town of Greene. The final condition of Hasslett’s plea bargain prohibits him from owning, possessing or harboring any animals.
At sentencing, Judge Howard Sullivan asked if Hasslett understood that he was pleading guilty to intentionally starving an animal to death. Hasslett replied, “Well the dog was sick and he wasn’t eating right.” Gordon then turned to his client and asked, “You do understand because you failed to provide care, you caused its death?” Hasslett then said, “Oh, yes.”
