Tractor-trailer comes free from cab, blocks traffic on 12

NORWICH – A tractor-trailer pulling out onto Rt. 12 had its trailer come free from the cab, blocking both lanes of traffic for nearly an hour. The accident happened at around 9:15 a.m. Monday just north of the Wal-Mart traffic light, in the Town of Norwich.
The truck was pulling out of JE Hitt Hay & Straw and belonged to the business. The driver, Benjamin Hitt, was carrying a full load of hay in the trailer. Apparently the load was not properly secured to the truck as it pulled out on to the highway, State Police said. After several attempts and with the aid of a large bulldozer, worker were able to reattach the rig long enough to move it about 40 feet back into the company’s driveway.
The New York State Troopers responded to the scene and issued Hitt a ticket for failing to secure a trailer under the New York State Transportation law.
