Cincinnatus man charged in infant's death

A Cincinnatus man has been charged with manslaughter in the death of a 16-month-old boy. The Chenango County Sheriff’s Department has arrested Jason Sherman, 24, for first degree manslaughter and assault in connection with the death of a 16-month-old child, Marshal Lee Barber, on Nov. 10, 2006.
Investigators say Sherman, who was the live-in boyfriend of the child’s mother, killed the infant by striking him, apparently in an attempt to discipline the toddler. The assault caused a lethal blunt head trauma to the infant, who died hours later. Police also said they suspect a longer history of abuse.
“It was something that required a lot of medical expertise and analysis. These days they can tell just about everything from examining an injury,” said Chenango County Sheriff Thomas Loughren. “We had to wait until the doctors had made a thorough determination of the medical evidence.”
Sheriff’s deputies served a warrant Thursday after the District Attorney’s office took the case straight to the grand jury for an indictment. Sherman was picked up in Cortland County shortly thereafter.
Sherman is being held at the Chenango County Correctional Facility on $500,000 cash bail and may appear in county court as early as Friday.
