Stricter penalties for child abusers

Children are our nation’s greatest treasure. I know it is an often repeated and over used phrase, but it is true. A string of recent events in the news has led me to wonder why the country doesn’t take a stricter stand against child abuse and crimes against children.
In my opinion, abuse against a child is one of the most revolting and heinous of all crimes. Any type of violence or assault is wrong and should not be tolerated, but the idea of focusing that violence on an innocent child is, perhaps, the worst crime a person can commit.
A few weeks ago, The Evening Sun reported on Jason Sherman, a Cincinatus man who was arrested and charges with Manslaughter, for allegedly causing the death of a 16 month old baby boy. An investigation into the death of the baby, showed a history of abuse, and according to the District Attorney the child suffered a violent death.
Days later, CNN reported on the story of a child who was taken away from its mother twice, because of abuse, which included broken arms. When the child was returned to her care the second time, the child suffered blunt head trauma, and was killed.
As the mother of a one-year-old baby, I cannot imagine any situation that would drive a person to abuse a helpless and innocent child. In my opinion the penalties for abusing a child should be much stricter than they currently are. In all truthfulness, I would like to see the abusers suffer the same type of pain they inflict upon the children, but I don’t see that law passing in the house and senate. As an alternative, I would settle for seeing the abusers thrown in jail, without the possibility of having their children returned to their care.
Many people don’t want government authorities to tell them how to raise their children and what is or is not an appropriate form of punishment, but the safety of children is more important than those minor concerns.
Often times when children are pulled from an abusive situation, they are returned to the same situation shortly after. It is not the fault of social services, they can only do what the law allows. Laws need to be changed to better protect the safety and the rights of the child, instead of the rights of the parents. The child abusers shouldn’t be given multiple chances to get it right, at the expense of a child’s life.
