City begins clean-up after yesterday’s Nor’Easter

NORWICH – An unseasonably late winter storm blew into Norwich Sunday night, dropping several inches of wet, heavy snow and causing tree limbs and power lines to come down in many areas of the city by Monday. Today, the city Department of Public Works will continue working to clean up the damage left by the storm.

According to DPW Superintendent Carl Ivarson, the snow caused several large trees and tree limbs to come down. He explained that yesterday, the DPW’s biggest concern was clearing the roads to ensure traffic could get through. Ivarson said DPW employees were out plowing roads by 4 a.m. Monday. “The guys are doing a fantastic job,” the DPW chief said.

According to Ivarson, today, crews will begin to pick up the debris left behind by the falling trees and power lines. The debris was pushed out of the way yesterday, but today the real clean-up will begin.

Yesterday, falling tree limbs caused an early morning power outage that affected a large portion of the City of Norwich, including the pumps leading to some wells and filters for the city’s water. City residents were asked to conserve water until the problem was addressed. Ivarson said the need to conserve water has passed. “The power is back on to the wells and filters,” he said. “The most important thing is that the wastewater plant is still running,” Ivarson said.
