Remember when: Ives Cream takes you back

NORWICH – If ever your fondest memories could come on a cone, the Ives Cream ice cream parlor in downtown Norwich would probably be the place that’d serve it.
Short a time machine, owners Alex and Katie Ives say their vision is to “bring you back” with big scoops and little reminders of a place and time when life seemed simple.
“In this busy, busy, busy life – with cell phones, wireless Internet and everything else – we wanted to give everyone a reprieve from that,” Katie said, amidst generations of family photos that adorn the parlor’s walls, and the old barn trusses and beams that bring home its turn-of-the-century feel. “We want folks to think about their families and think about their past. We want them to think about something simple.”
With one year under their belt, the Ives have re-opened for a second season with bigger expectations and a better understanding of the business. They said aside from new flavors – like Chai Tea flavored ice cream, their experiment-turned-hit – there will also be an Ives cream mini-parlor opening on-site at NYSEG Stadium in Binghamton for the already underway Binghamton Mets home games.
“It was very much a learning experience,” said Katie, who added that the upstairs of their 10 S. Broad St. location has been remodeled into a party/events room (available upon reservation), and that their ice cream production center in the downstairs has been upgraded with a viewing room. “It’s even better than we envisioned.”
Katie said their customers and the community have validated the confidence they have in their final product – which begins on the Ives family dairy farm in Guilford and ends at their shop in Norwich – giving them a good feeling about their future in Norwich, Chenango County, and possibly beyond.
“This community is one of the most supportive communities around,” she said. “We’ve been so embraced with open arms.”
Ives Cream in located at 10 S. Broad St. in downtown Norwich next to Skillin’s Jewelers. Their current spring hours are noon to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
The Ives said they’re always open to flavor suggestions, adding that customers can expect several new flavors (currently in development) to be introduced this summer.
