Oxford continues to look at middle school building’s future

OXFORD – Despite the recent concern over what the district should do with its aging middle school building, no one from the public showed up at Oxford’s Board of Education meeting Wednesday.
Oxford Academy has been looking at what exactly to do with its middle school building. The structure’s 77-year-old design proved vulnerable in last year’s unusually severe floods, costing the school about $1.1 million in repairs. Superintendent Randy Squier said the school will be bringing in a private engineering firm to assess the building and offer suggestions.
The school board did discuss ongoing audit of its business departments by independent firms, which is required by law at least every five years.
They also approved a few personnel memorandums and briefly discussed the district’s eligibility to apply for certain types of flood aid, none of which applied to Oxford. The state is offering aid to local districts if homes in their area had their values drastically reassessed. The aid is to replace the loss of property taxes a district might have collected before the flood damage causing those reassessments.
The board adjourned and plans to meet next week for a review of the 2007-2008 school budget.
