Big celebration planned for July 4

NORWICH – Millennia-Entertainment and the Norwich Fire Department will be coordinating a much larger July 4 celebration this year than in the past.
Millennia-Entertainment has sponsored several events throughout the area and will be bringing in a nationally acclaimed country artist, said its Managing Partner Terry Potter. “Little Texas was one of them, but they got signed elsewhere,” said Potter.
The Norwich FD has annually sponsored the fireworks display for the last seven years and will be co-coordinators for this year’s July 4 event. The event is scheduled to take place at the county fairgrounds in Norwich. Tickets will be going on sale in mid-May and will cost $15 a car load or family pass and $7 for an individual pass, said Potter.
The Ross Park Zoo will be sending its popular zoo-mobile to the event. The park will bring with it rare birds of prey, exotic reptiles and more.
Another new development in the growing festivities is the addition of a family fun zone, themed “Reading in our Lives.” The area will be aimed at children and families and will have at least 6 fully dressed reading mascot’s, including Winnie the Pooh, Clifford the Big Red Dog and more. There will also be a stage set up in the area for contributors to sponsor book readings.
A small carnival, including games and vendors, will be offered. Organizers were looking into the possibility of running a demolition derby, but had to abandon the idea. “We hope it will resemble something similar to the county’s fair, but not nearly as large,” said Potter. Non-profit organizations will be allowed to set up free of charge at the event.
Millennia has made arrangements for one of its highlights to include the NASCAR show cars of Jeff Gordon and Jimmy Johnson, brought to the event by Hendrick Motor Sports from North Carolina.
The group has sponsored many other festivities in the region and contracted such famous artists as Lynyrd Skynyrd, Kenny Rogers and Willie Nelson. There will be a national performer at the Fourth of July event as well, but negotiations are still under way to have one signed. “It will be a national headliner,” said Potter.
Millennia sponsored a similar event in 2005 at the Otsego County fairgrounds in Morris, which drew just under 7,000 patrons. The organization’s goal is to draw as many as 10 to 15,000 to the Norwich event. “We are planning around the projection of 10,000 people at least,” said Potter.
