A sweep for Tornado track team
Track and Field
NORWICH – Norwich did the best thing possible to pay tribute to the three Norwich girls honored (Katie Almeter, Rachel Nargiso, and Emily Collins) in the 2nd Annual REK Invitational: Sweep the team titles in impressive fashion.
The Purple Tornado rolled to its dominating victory with superior balance across the board, while also saving some of its best performances for the school’s biggest home meet of the season. “It seemed like every kid I spoke to after their race, they were telling me they had another personal best,” said Norwich co-head coach Paul Sims.
Norwich senior Keegan Edwards was named the boys’ most outstanding athlete winning three individual events (110 hurdles, 400 hurdles, pole vault), while also teaming for a first in the 1600-meter relay.
Eric Muserallo wasn’t far behind his NHS compatriot with three total first-place finishes, and Brennan Ryan swept the discus and shot put.
Overall, Norwich took nine events in the six-team field, swept the top three spots in the 400-meter hurdles, and had seven events in which it took at least two of the top three spots. “It’s been a great year for our team, and this turned out to be a great event,” Sims said.
Norwich’s boys racked up 123.5 points to runner-up Sherburne-Earlville’s 58.5. The Marauders’ record-holding jumper, senior Travis Tomaselli, won the triple jump and long jump, and finished second to teammate Bill Caton in the high jump.
On the girls’ side, the Purple girls scored 117.5 total points to outdistance runner-up Greene (68.5 points).
Senior Minda Moore, competing in the shot put for just her second season, broke the Norwich school record in the shot put by 10 1/2 inches throwing it 39-1 1/2. It was one of nine wins for Norwich on the day that included multiple individual firsts from Carly Law and Katie Benenati. Cassidy Griffin (high jump), Brittany Barnes (triple jump), and Elisha Eddy (400 meters) all added individual wins for the winning team.
Greene’s Anna Crumb took the 800- and 1,500-meter races en route her most outstanding female athlete award. Morris’ Kayla Forgit picked up most improved athlete honors.
