Building Safety Week in Norwich

NORWICH – At a recent meeting of the City of Norwich Common Council, Mayor Joseph Maiurano signed a proclamation declaring the week of May 6-12 “Building Safety Week.”
“Through the continuing attention to building safer for everyday life and in times of disaster, we enjoy the comfort and peace of mind of structures that are safe and sound,” the proclamation reads.
Building safety week was first observed in 1980. Sponsored by the International Code Council Foundation, building safety week promotes the use, enforcement and understanding of building and fire codes in everyday life.
“Safe and proper construction of buildings is rarely on your mind when you enter a home or building. Fortunately, the staff in the City of Norwich Code Enforcement Office thinks about building safety and fire prevention every day,” said a recent press release from the codes department. In an effort to raise awareness of building safety, the code enforcement office will be recognizing building safety and fire prevention through this year’s theme, Building Smarter... for Disasters and Everyday Life. The theme is especially poignant this year, given the flooding events in June and November.
“The importance of regulating and enforcing building codes is often overlooked until a catastrophic tragedy occurs,” the press release states. Code enforcement officials use building codes to ensure the safety of buildings and properties. With the cooperation of homeowners, builders, engineers, and architects the codes department can operate efficiently and effectively to ensure the safety of buildings, residents and belongings.
“Building Safety Week recognizes the important professionals who make sure the buildings in our community are safe. Public safety is our number one concern,” said City Code Enforcement Officer Jason Lawrence. “Building and fire officials are here to help you understand building safety issues. In this age of do-it-yourselfers, it is important for homeowners to work with the city to make sure their residences fully comply with building safety codes.”
To celebrate Building Safety Week a Meet the City Code Enforcement Department event will be held from 8 to 10 a.m. on Tuesday at Curtis Lumber, located on Hale Street in Norwich. Members of the City Emergency Management Office will also be participating in the event. In addition, an informational session will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday at the City Fire Department in the second floor meeting room. The session will discuss the City Code’s newly amended Chapter 50: Minimum Standards for Housing, which includes the city’s new rental registration policy. Staff will be on hand to answer questions and help to fill out the rental registration applications.
