Oneonta bats come to life early in blowout win over Tornado

NORWICH – Oneonta caught lightning in a bottle from the start grabbing a big lead early to hand Norwich a lopsided defeat in the Tornado’s season finale Monday.
Victor Mercurio led off a six-run second with a triple, Lance Potter had an RBI double, Matt Marcewicz followed with an RBI double, Lance Ratchford connected for a two-run single, and Ryan Lynch lashed one of his two doubles driving in a run. “Oneonta is probably one of the best hitting lineups we’ve seen, and we just struggled to get out of that inning,” said Norwich coach John Martinson.
Potter and Marcewicz each went 3-for-4 to lead Oneonta.
Norwich’s Tyler Saroka hit an RBI double in the seventh inning as the Tornado close the season at 2-13.

OXFORD – State-ranked Oxford continued its unbeaten stroll through the Midstate Athletic conference beating local rival Greene Monday.
Nate Sortino started off the scoring with a two-run double in the first as part of a four-run uprising for the Blackhawks. Senior hurler Steve Locke held the Trojans’ bats in check with six shutout innings for the victory.
Pat Wade added two hits – a double and a triple – and Ben Burdick scored three runs for Oxford (17-1).
Keith Savory and Brock Rowe had a pair of hits for Greene.

SAUQUOIT – All nine S-E starters had basehits as the Marauders clinched a winning record in Center State Conference play, that after starting the season 0-4.
Mike McCredy scored Caleb Brown and Sam McClain with a two-run single in the seventh to give the Marauders a three-run cushion for Brown.
Brown allowed four hits striking out 11 and walking two for the win. “Caleb was in control the whole game,” said S-E coach Brian Hicks. “We were only up a run after the sixth inning, but it really wasn’t that close. We were hitting the ball all day and they weren’t.”
Jake Sampson provided what would be the winning run with an RBI single in the sixth. Junior Ethan Sconzo led the Marauders at the plate finishing 4-for-4.
S-E (6-4, 6-7) plays a twi-night doubleheader at Ilion Wednesday.

COPES CORNERS – G-MU busted out with a seven-run fifth inning to pull away from the Purple Devils Monday.
Cody Hall continued his torrid hitting against Franklin this season finishing 4-for-4 with a double and a triple plus two RBI. He is 9-for-10 in two G-MU wins over Franklin this season. “And there hasn’t been a cheap hit in the bunch,” added G-MU coach Jim Johnson.
Tim Sloan pitched three scoreless innings and allowed just one hit to earn the victory. Tyler Wildfeir was 2-for-3 with one RBI.
G-MU (5-5, 6-7) is at Laurens Wednesday.

NEW BERLIN – Walton bombed the Storm in the fourth inning pushing 14 runs across in a blowout win Monday.
Chris Mead and Bryan Backus each went 3-for-6 with two RBI, and Casey Killian added two hits and three ribbies.

Otselic Valley 6, McGraw 0
MCGRAW – Brian Graham pitched a three-hit shutout walking just one batter, and the Vikings moved toward a postseason berth with the win Monday.
Graham now has just two issued base on balls this season and 35 strikeouts. He was aided by the outfield play of Aaron Wood and Chris Olin to preserve the shutout, said OV head coach Dave Loomis.
Taylor Duell doubled twice and drove in two runs to lead the Vikings, who host Cincinnatus today.

Oxford 6, Greene 5
OXFORD – Oxford rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh to defeat Greene for the first time in several years.
The Blackhawks (7-11) managed all of their runs without a hit scoring two runs on a throwing error and the last one – the game-winner – on a fielder’s choice. “It feels really good and we’re playing much better,” said Oxford coach Margo Barrows. “We’re playing with a lot more confidence since we played on Friday.”
Marlena Frank and Patti Dalglish had two hits for Oxford, who finish at home today against Delhi.
Beth Ludwig was 3-for-4 with two RBI for Greene and Megan Boeltz went 3-for-4 with a triple.

Unadilla Valley 4, Walton 3
NEW BERLIN – Kristen Elliott arrived to the field with just a few minutes to spare. Sick earlier in the day, Elliott returned from a brief hospital visit to throw a one-hitter in UV’s season-ending win over Walton.
After suffering early control problems, Elliott finished with four scoreless innings and struck out eight Walton hitters.
Leslie Barnes scored the game-winner after a passed ball in the fourth, and Katrina Benson led with a 2-for-3 day. Caree Acre put UV on the board with an RBI double in the first.
UV finishes the regular season at 6-9 overall.

SAUQUOIT – Sherburne-Earlville finished its first season sweep of Sauquoit Valley, while also managing its first league winning record since joining Section III five years ago after Monday’s win.
Katie Graham finished 4-for-5 with four RBI, Kate Fitzpatrick drove in three runs on two hits, Dee Holden and Heather Barley each went 2-for-3, and winning pitcher Lindsay Hodges helped her own cause hitting a two-run homer in the seventh. Bree Neisinger added a two-hit day.

FRANKLIN – G-MU sent a parade of runners around the bases with an 11-run first inning, and cruised to its third win of the season Monday against Franklin.
The Raiders drew 22 base on balls in the contest, many of those in the first inning. Ashlea Osborne led the hitting attack with three doubles and a single to finish with two RBI.
Brandy Welch and Courtney Hillman added to a healthy lead hitting back-to-back home runs in a seven-run third inning. Welch also smacked a double.
G-MU plays a doubleheader at Laurens Wednesday.

MCGRAW – Sarah Bilodeau’s sacrifice fly to right field scored Monica Byron with the winning run in McGraw’s eight-inning victory over Otselic Valley Monday.
The Vikings seemed to take control in the top of the seventh scoring three runs. Chelsea Coye and Amanda Morse had a pair of RBI hits to fuel the lead. Kim Lewis led the Vikings with a 3-for-4 day at the plate.
OV hosts Madison today.

GREENE – Greene finishes its regular season at 8-4 and tied for second place in the MAC after a sweep of Hancock Monday.
Ben Williams, Frank Smith, and Craig Hebbard all won in straight sets for the Trojans (8-4), who compete in the Class C sectionals Thursday at Delhi.
