S-E kids could win a car at after-prom party
SHERBURNE – The Sherburne-Earlville Junior prom will be held Saturday and committee members are busily planning for their fourth annual after-prom party.
“The after-prom party gives kids a safe, fun environment for after the prom,” said Coordinator Rochelle Harris. “Statistics for drunk driving accidents for teens are high, and this gives them an alternative that parents can rest assured is safe.”
As in the past years, the highlight of S-E’s celebration will be the prizes that are awarded throughout the night. For the past four years, juniors in the district have enjoyed the possibility of winning cash, senior portrait packages, digital cameras, laptop computers and the grand prize – a car.
Dick Pope, owner of Norwich Chrysler Dodge Jeep, has been helping with the after-prom party since it began, and this year is no different. “He (Pope) donates a good portion of the vehicle,” explained Harris. “He really does a lot for us.” A white Kia Sephia will be given away at this year’s prom party. All juniors attending the party will be automatically entered for the grand prize, but they must be present to win.
The event will be held from 1 to 5:30 a.m. at the Fox Run Events Center. It will feature a mechanical bull, a bungee run, human jousting, air brush tattoos and many other activities. Door prizes will be given out every 15 minutes. Pizza, ice cream sundaes and fresh fruit trays will be available.
“Area businesses have been very supportive,” said Harris, explaining that contributions have come from businesses from Norwich to Hamilton and many other places in between. The event’s biggest contributor has been Assemblyman Gary Finch (R-Springport), who gave $2,000 to help fund the event. The after -prom party committee is close to reaching their fundraising goal of $10,000. “It’s been successful and the kids have been happy,” Harris said.
Each year approximately 130 to 150 kids attend, depending on the size of the class. “Anyone who attends the prom can come, and juniors who don’t go to the prom can still attend the party,” Harris explained. There is no charge for admission.
“Our hope is that parents encourage their kids to come and enjoy this,” said Harris.
