Youth Bureau announces summer programs

NORWICH – The City of Norwich Youth Bureau will hold registration for its summer programs from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 6 at the City Hall Youth Bureau Office. Programs are open to residents of the City of Norwich and Towns of Norwich, North Norwich, Preston, Plymouth and Pharsalia free of charge. Registrants from other areas will be charged $32 for one event, and $16 for each subsequent event. Children missing three or more consecutive classes may be dropped because of limited enrollment space. The programs are:
• Swimming lessons - for ages 5 to 20 at the Kurt Beyer Pool, 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Monday through Friday. The first session will be held from Wednesday, July 2 to Friday, July 20. Registration for the second session, which will run from Monday, July 23 through Friday, August 10, will be held Friday, July 20 at the Kurt Beyer Pool.
• Guard start - a life guard starter course will be offered from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. for six weeks, beginning on July 2 at the Kurt Beyer Pool. Those interested should see Noreen at the program sign-up for more information.
• Competitive swim team - ages 8 and up, will be held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at Kurt Beyer.
• Playground - open to children ages 5 to 9. Two sites are available. At the Norwich Middle School Playground, children will be able to have playground time from 12 to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, beginning on July 2 and running through August 10. The site is limited to 30 children.
The Borden Ave. Skating Facility will also be available for an additional 20 students. During the same time period. Students at the Borden Ave. site will be able to participate in a new program that will encourage exercise ad healthy eating for kids.
• Soccer - six week program starting July 2 through Aug. 10. Four programs are available. Participants should only sign up for one.
Program one will be for children in kindergarten through first grade. Practice will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. on Monday and Wednesday, and games will be from 6 to 7 p.m. on Fridays at the Perry Brown Soccer Field.
Program two, will be for the same age level, but practices will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday. Games will be Fridays from 6 to 7.
Program three will be for children in second through fourth grade. Practice will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. on Monday and Wednesday and games will be from 7 to 8 on Fridays.
Program four also for second through fourth graders will practice from 7 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday and will have games from 7 to 8 on Fridays.
• Tennis - for ages 8 and up. Beginners sessions will be held from 9 to 9:45, intermediate from 10 to 10:45 and advanced from 11 to 11:45, Monday through Friday at the Conkey Ave. Tennis Courts at Perry Browne School. Runs July 2 through Aug. 10.
• Summer Educational and Fun Trips - bus trips to museums, zoos, state parks, beaches and amusement parks. Free transportation is provided, but in some cases a charge for admission is required.
• Borden Ave. Skating Facility and Skateboard Park - open all summer. The skate park is unattended and participants skate at their own risk. Protective equipment is required.
