Sherburne library kicks off summer reading program

SHERBURNE – This summer, the Sherburne Public Library will celebrate “Get a Clue,” the theme of their 2007 Summer Reading Program.
The Summer Reading Program will be open to children ages 3 to 12, with ages 8 through 12 meeting at 1 p.m. each Wednesday, and ages 3 through 8, along with their caretakers, meeting at 10 a.m. each Thursday for a junior version of the program.
The program begins on Wednesday, July 11. Children ages 8 to 12 will enjoy Rod Sutton’s Reptile World. The library will host all sorts of slinky, scaly guests, who are not for the squeamish. On Thursday, 3 through 8 year olds will enjoy an imaginary visit with snakes.
The fun continues on July 18, when children will be able to get a clue about the work of author/illustrator Lois Ehlert. The day’s activities will include reading some of her clever children’s literature, following which children will get the chance to experiment with hands-on collage making that duplicates some of Ehlert’s illustrations. Similar activities will be offered Thursday for the younger crowd.
The third week’s activities will include a magic show, and children will be able to get a clue about some of the tricks of the trade with Doug Day. Children will read about magicians, their illusions and try a trick or two of their own.
Special guest Lisa Merian will host a felting workshop on Aug. 1. The event will be open to the whole family, but 8 year-olds and younger must be accompanied by a caretaker. Little ones will enjoy creating their own felt board on Thursday, Aug. 2 with library staff.
The fifth week of our Summer Reading Program is all about music. The whole family may relax in our air-conditioning at 1 p.m. on Aug. 8 and enjoy a performance by Bells and Motley. Get a clue about the stories and secrets behind some of the most rare, mysterious and magical, musical instruments of history. The 3 to 8 year-old group may then enjoy some hands-on musical fun with string teacher Chris Shenkel at 10 a.m. on Aug. 9.
A grand finale at 1 p.m. on Aug. 15 gets a clue to a close. Steve Tomecek, a.k.a. “The Dirtmeister,” will amaze library patrons with his “Magnificent Mysteries of Science,” a show sure to activate the senses as well as educate the mind. The library requests a friendly call to let them know you will be attending the event at 674-4242. “Get-a Clue” at the Sherburne Public Library this summer, located at 2 East State Street in downtown Sherburne.
