Man accused of causing the death of babysitter gets a new lawyer

NORWICH – A man recently accused of causing the death of his 12-year-old babysitter has retained new representation.
George Ford Jr., 42, of Piscataway, N.J., was arrested for first-degree reckless endangerment following a July 8 incident that left Shyanne A. Somers, 12, South Otselic, dead.
Originally Ford was represented by the Public Defender’s Office, but has now retained the services of defense attorney Randel Scharf of Cooperstown. Sharf has grabbed local headlines in recent months for his representation of two cases returned to the District Attorney’s Office on appeal – Tammi Van Deusen and Peter M. Wlasiuk. Last month, Sharf made the motion to get the indictment against Wlasiuk dismissed and was supported by the court.
The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office has been continuing its investigation into the death of Somers. “We are using all means at our disposal to carry out a thorough investigation,” said Sheriff Thomas Loughren.
The investigation revealed that Ford returned home to his seasonal residence on Rt. 26 in South Otselic, Saturday evening at around 10:30 p.m. to change clothes. Ford planned on returning to a graduation party he’d been attending all afternoon where his wife and young child still were, but wanted to bring his child home for bed. Before leaving he asked his neighbors, the victim and the victim’s mother, if they could babysit for him. The young girl agreed and went back with Ford.
Ford’s wife unexpectedly returned home from the party in a separate vehicle with their child and decided she wanted to stay instead. Ford then allegedly decided to take Somers back home.
On the way to take Somers home, Ford stopped along Will Warner Road to allow the girl to visit his horses. Somers got out of the truck to see the horses and walked along the road with the truck driving along side her. Unable to see any of the animals, Ford drove up the road to turn around and got stuck; during the course of these maneuvers he struck and killed the girl with his front bumper and tire.
Ford is currently being held on $100,000 bail and awaiting his grand jury appearance later in the month.
