Schumer awards grants to two area fire departments

CHENANGO COUNTY – On Wednesday, New York State Senator Charles Schumer (D-NY) announced $215,000 in grants would be awarded to five Southern Tier fire departments, including two in Chenango County.
According to a press release sent by Schumer’s office, the Plymouth Volunteer Fire Department and the Smyrna Fire Company will be receiving a portion of the grant money.
“This funding will go a long way in supporting the first responders in the Southern Tier,” Schumer said. The grant money was awarded as part of the 2007 Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program, administered by the Department of Homeland Security.
The Plymouth Volunteer Department was awarded $18,240. According to Plymouth Fire Chief Matt Bates, the department will use the money to improve their communications. Bates explained that the department will be purchasing new radios, pagers and other communications equipment to improve communications on emergency scenes.
“Better communications means no injuries and no deaths,” Bates explained. “It will help me to know where my firefighters are when we’re on an emergency scene.”
Bates said the department has needed the equipment for a while. “It will be used for internal communication as well as communication with neighboring departments,” Bates said.
This is the third year the Plymouth Fire Department has received the grant.
The Smyrna Fire Company will receive $33,678 in grant money. Smyrna’s Fire Chief Norm Wynn said the money will be used to purchase new turnout gear – also known as personal protective equipment – for the firemen in his department. “We’ve got some new firemen, and some of the equipment wasn’t meeting regulations. This will get them into some safer gear,” Wynn said.
The Fire Chief explained that his department had received this grant a couple of times in the past and had used it to purchase other equipment needed by the department. “The grant is a great help. We’re glad to get it,” Wynn said.
The Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program began in 2001, and since that time, over $122 million has been awarded to fire departments in New York. “This federal money will help make sure that firefighters in Broome, Chenango, Schuyler and Delaware Counties get the resources they need and have enough people on hand to keep our communities safe,” Schumer said.
