SMTS stages “A ... My Name is Alice”

SHERBURNE – Sherburne Music Theater Society is gearing up for their summer musical performance of “A ... My Name is Alice” on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 10 and 11 at 7 p.m. at the Palace Theater in Hamilton, which is proving a most felicitous and intimate performance space for this delightful show.

Originally produced by the Women’s Project of the American Place Theatre, “A ... My Name is Alice” opened in a tiny basement space in that New York theatre in 1984. Right from the start, the simply presented, unadorned Alice proved to be the little musical revue that could. Never maudlin nor preachy, the bright little musical revue containing 20 or so self-contained songs and sketches portraying women of all ages and types in a wide variety of situations and relationships with insight, empathy and self deprecating humor. Conceived by Joan Micklin Silver and Julianne Boyd; Alice enjoyed a long run at the Village Gate Off-Broadway and was winner of the Outer Critics’ Circle Award for Best Musical.

The SMTS cast is made up of nine talented performers: Shari Taylor, Sarah Liuzzo, Krysta Nower, Maggie Fitzpatrick, Lauren Mettler, Ellen Fagan, Nicole St. Pierre, Evie Hammer-Lester, and Lisette Shiffer. The production is directed by Donna Moren (who directed SMTS’ successful musical “Wizard of Oz” last summer). Winnie Sortman is the music director and the pit band consists of Rosemary Jaytanie on Piano, Bethany Sortman on synthesizer, Rachel Perry on reeds and Mary Rutz on percussion.
