Gus’ asks community to support Catholic Charities

NORWICH – Maria Stamatatos, the owner of Gus’ Steakhouse in Norwich, wants to see more people support community organizations. That’s why she’s decided to hold a raffle this weekend, with proceeds going to benefit the Crime Victims Program at Catholic Charities.
“I believe that fundraisers are wonderful. We need to give back to community organizations that give so much to the community,” Stamatatos said. The Crime Victims Program is one of those organizations.
“The Crime Victims Program serves victims of domestic violence, rape, sexual assault, child abuse and violent crime. The services are not needed by everybody, but when you do need them, it’s a desperate time. That’s what makes the program so critical,” said Crime Victim’s Advocate Derek Stratton.
At least 30 gift baskets will be available at Gus’ this weekend. Tickets for the event cost $18, which includes the cost of lunch and three raffle slips, that can be used to try to win any basket. Additional raffle slips can be purchased at the cost of six for $5. The lunch menu will include a non-alcoholic beverage, salad, a choice of prime rib, salmon or grilled chicken, desert and coffee. From 12 to 1 p.m. customers will be allowed to mingle and check out the different gift baskets throughout the restaurant. From 1 to 2 p.m. lunch will be served, and from 2 to 3 p.m. the raffle will be held.
“These organizations go out of their way to help the community, with no questions asked. I expect the community to get involved and sometimes I’m disappointed because I’d like to see the community give back more,” Stamatatos said.
Baskets have been donated by customers, businesses and community members. Many of the baskets were made by Stamatatos herself, with the help of donations received from the community. Each of Stamatatos employees will also be donating a basket for the fundraiser.
“The money will be used to help the victims of violent crimes. Since it’s cash, it will go directly to the victims, instead of paying for over-head costs or personnel,” said Maggie O’Conner, another Crime Victims Advocate.
