Miss New York State Teen-Ager crowned in Norwich pageant

NORWICH – With dimmed lights and sparkling props, 28 young women from across New York took to the stage Saturday, hoping for a chance to be crowned the next Miss Teen-Ager of New York.
The high school auditorium, containing dozens of family and friends, was bustling with cheers and clapping as each of the girls walked, spoke and posed on stage for the panel of three judges. The judges were Kerrylyn Boettcher, Tiffany Vacirca, Melissa Roach, and the tabulator was current Mrs. New York State, Shana Jaycox.
Throughout the girls three-day stay in Norwich, all 28 had a chance to get acquainted, practice for the competition, and do various other actives. On Friday, they each gave a nine-minute speech with three separate judges. The girls were judged on grammar, personality, speech and poise.
Early Saturday, the girls were escorted in eight classic cars, provided by the Rolling Antiquers Old Car Club, to the local high school.
Opening the show, the girls took to the stage and performed a dance routine. Following the opening number, taking the place of the bathing suit competition for the first time this year, the girls first posed and walked in casual wear. The girls sparkled along with the decorated stage next during the formal wear competition.
Following the formal wear competition, the top 10 were chosen. Each of the 10 picked gave a one-minute speech on topics ranging from NASCAR to community service to figure skating.
The judges then narrowed down the competition to the top five, who each had an interview on stage with Pageant Director Dick Gillespie. After the final scores were calculated, it was announced two girls had tied for the crown.
“Throughout the 34 years of this pageant, this was the first time a tie for the winner had ever occurred,” said Gillespie.
As recalculation and finalized scores were decided upon, two other category winners were announced. Winning Miss Congeniality, which is chosen by all the girls attending the pageant was Miss Herkimer County Ashley Crane and winning the photogenic category picked by local photographer Frank Speziale was Miss Washington County, Chelsea Brumagen.
Fourth runner-up was Miss Thousand Islands Tiffany Arnold, third runner-up was Miss Washington County Chelsea Brumagen, second runner-up was Miss Greater Rochester Kerisa Bonville, first runner-up was Miss Upstate New York Heather Knowles and crowned Miss Teen-Ager of New York 2007 was Miss St. Lawrence County Jessica Martin.
Martin is a 19-year-old figure skater who will be attending Syracuse University as a freshman this fall. While on stage, Martin spoke about her love for figure skating and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
Other area contestants competing for the state title were: Miss Chenango County Gina Rosa of Norwich, Afton Fair Teen-Ager, Ayla Martin of Afton, Miss Otsego County Danielle Murphy and Miss Southern Tier Felicia Tynan, both of Oxford.
Saying she was still in shock from the win, Martin said, “It is an honor to win such a competition.”
