Free rabies clinics this weekend
CHENANGO COUNTY – Every ten minutes, rabies claims the life of a person somewhere in the world and nearly 7,000 cases were reported in the United States last year alone.
Sept. 8 is International Rabies Awareness Day and dozens of countries across the globe, along with several veterinarian schools in the U.S., will be mark the occasion with events to create public awareness and halt the spread of the disease.
The Chenango County Department of Public Health will be offering three different rabies clinics over the weekend. Free immunizations will be given today, Friday, at the New Berlin Firehouse from 7 to 8:30 p.m., on Saturday from 8 to 10 a.m. at the North Norwich Firehouse and later that same day from noon to 2 p.m. at the Greene Firehouse.
“It doesn’t cost the owner anything and it helps ensure the health of the animal while also helping to protect the community,” said Jessica Seiler at the Public Health Department.
All immunizations will be provided courtesy of Public Health, but visitors are invited to give donations. A regularly scheduled veterinarian visit and rabies shot costs between $35 and $50 dollars locally.
New York State Public Health Rabies Law requires that all dogs, cats and domesticated ferrets to receive immunization against rabies no later than four months of age and the New York State requires dogs to be licensed at four months. Proof of vaccination is required before a dog can be licensed.
Animals vaccinated for the first time must be revaccinated within a year to qualify for three-year coverage. Organizers are asking that visitors bring their previous vaccination record to verify if the pet is eligible for three-year coverage.
Animals must be under the control of a qualified handler. Dogs must be on a leash, cats should be transported in a box, crate, pillowcase, or other container, said the Public Health Department.
Dr. Catherine Cruz, DVM, is the Chenango County Rabies Coordinator and will be heading up each of the clinics this weekend. To ask questions or lobby concerns regarding rabies, contact the Chenango County Department of Public Health at 337-1673.
