'Eat Local' challenge begins Monday
CHENANGO COUNTY – The Chenango County Eat Local Challenges begins on Monday, Sept. 10 and runs through Sunday, Sept. 16. The event is organized by Opportunities for Chenango, Inc.’s Bullthistle Products: Access to Markets Program, and Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chenango County Agri Tourism Program, The Evening Sun and local businesses and restaurants.
During this week, Chenango County residents are encouraged to eat as much local food as possible and learn about the abundance of foods available during this season.
Residents can participate in the Challenge by registering and receiving the “Eat Local Challenge Guide and Passport” booklet. Included in the booklet are: a one-week calendar to record the food you eat and it’s origin; tips on eating local; a checklist of resources available within the county; restaurants offering meals prepared from local products during the Challenge week; a reading list; a list of Farmer’s Markets and Community Supported Agriculture farms; cooking tips and recipes; and other helpful information.
The booklet is available at the Norwich Farmer’s Market on Wednesday and Saturday mornings and will also be available at the Bullthistle Products booth near Garf’s Deli during Colorscape Chenango.
Participants who collect 12 stickers from businesses in the Passport will be eligible for a drawing to win the “Basket of Local Bounty,” containing $75 worth of local foods and products. The drawing will be held on September 22 at noon at the Norwich Farmers Market.
To make eating local more convenient during the week, six area restaurants will be serving Eat Local Specials. Monday – lunch at Hoppie’s in Oxford. Tuesday – lunch at Ives Cream Parlor in Norwich. Wednesday – dinner at the Cornerstone Restaurant in Mt. Upton. Thursday – dinner at the Yaleville Inn in Bainbridge/Guilford. Friday – lunch and dinner at the Bohemian Moon in Norwich. Saturday – dinner at Remember When in New Berlin.
To make eating local more convenient throughout the year, Solstice Whole Foods at 30 South Broad Street in Norwich, has increased their inventory of local foods. They now carry Maple Avenue Farms beef, Evans’ dairy products, Alambria Springs Farm produce, Kutik’s Honey, Upstate Harvest Granola, Better Ways Farm eggs, Chenango Historic Cheese, Flax Snax Cookies and Solstice custom herbal tea blends.
For help finding other sources of local foods and products, purchase the Bullthistle Bounty Discount Card for $15 to receive 10 percent off select items at 34 participating businesses (including Solstice Whole Foods). You can also refer to the free Chenango County Guide to Locally Grown Products. Both of these items are available at the Norwich Farmers’ Market or by contacting Stacie Edick at OFC, Inc. at 334-7114 or Sophie Belanger at CCE at 334-5841.
