Drug bust uncovers threat against City PD
NORWICH – An ongoing drug investigation by the City of Norwich Police has uncovered a possible plot against at least two of its officers.
“In the course of an investigation into local drug activity in the City of Norwich, we uncovered a possible threat to officers from two separate sources and while evaluating these threats, the parties involved committed an overt act to follow through on these threats,” said Norwich Police Chief Joseph Angelino.
Mathew C. Smith, 27, refused to cooperate with police and gave no address, but is suspected to be from the Elmira or Norwich area. He was charged along with an alleged co-conspirator, Robert W. Gallo Jr., 25, of 22 Sheldon St., Norwich, with second degree conspiracy, a class B felony. Allegedly the two were planning to carry out attacks against two Norwich police officers.
Also charged in connection with the drug investigation are Adam Maricle, 27, of 6 Natoli Ave., Norwich, charged with the second degree criminal sale of a controlled substance, a Class B felony; and Chester Black Jr., 19, of Elmira, charged with third degree criminal mischief, a Class E felony. Black allegedly damaged Norwich City Police property in excess of $250.
